INTERNATIONAL TRADE

Exports add significantly to the bottom line of each U.S. pork producer. With 2008 exports of 2.05 million metric tons of pork, which represents about 24.4 percent, nearly a quarter, of production, producers received nearly $48 for each hog marketed because of exports. U.S. exports of pork and pork products were valued at $4.9 billion in 2008, up from $394 million since the implementation in 1989 of the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement. Gaining and expanding access to markets through free trade agreements is paramount to the continued success of the U.S. pork industry.
