PORK PRODUCERS COMMEND THE U.S. SENATE FOR APPROVING PICK OF LEAVITT TO HEAD EPA

WASHINGTON, D.C.-October 29, 2003- National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) President Jon Caspers today commended the U.S. Senate for approving the nomination of Utah Gov. Michael O. Leavitt (R) to be the administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

"Gov. Leavitt has a well deserved reputation for reaching across party lines and across the agricultural community to lead collaborative efforts aimed at providing a common-sense balanced approach on environmental issues," said Caspers, a pork producer from Swaledale, Iowa.

According to Caspers, NPPC is looking forward to exploring ways to enhance pork producers' environmental management efforts with newly confirmed Administrator Leavitt. "For many years now, the pork industry has worked closely with the EPA on innovative projects that assist America's pork producers in meeting their environmental challenges with respect to our nation's air, water and soil resources," he said. "We believe Gov. Leavitt's integrity and comprehensive understanding of both agriculture and the environment will continue to assist in producing sensible, cost-effective solutions to the environmental challenges facing U.S. producers."

The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) is one of the nation’s largest livestock commodity organizations. It has producer members in 44 affiliated state associations and provides a unified voice for America’s pork producers on a wide range of industry and public policy issues. NPPC’s website is at www.nppc.org.
